Many of us think that emotion is usually one primary one, but we ignore the accompanying - and often opposing - emotions.
Let me give you and example.
A good friend of yours finally lands an interview after many weeks of unemployment. You are happy for her as you want her to be happy and earning an income, as you know that she is struggling financially. However alongside this, you feel a certain envy, because the job she is applying for is one at a higher level than yours - and more income. You also feel cross with yourself, because it's a job that you wish you had also applied for, but you didn't come across the advertisement. Because of these feelings of envy, you feel guilt because you feel that you are not being the good friend you should be. You are conflicted because when you speak with her about her employment prospects, you try to show only happiness for her, yet you know that within you are other lesser emotions which you try to hide.
So in any given situation, there is never one emotion, but several, although there is often one main emotion at play.
If human beings only ever felt one main emotion, life would be simple. But we don't. This is not how we are. The problem is that we usually think we feel the primary emotion, but rarely is this the case. And the problem with this is that there is never the experience of the one emotion, but rather the experience is of all that is present, whether or not we are conscious of this or not. Thus when we feel happy, there is often the fear of the happiness ending. When we feel depressed, we are never 100% depressed, because there are moments of excitement or happiness about something. When we feel grief, the grief is usually never constant in every moment and there may be moments of happiness about the subject of our grief.
The secret to happiness is accepting the conflicting emotions at play. If we can do this conflict ends, and we can see that life is simply a mixed bag - never straight forward as our mind, or ego, would have us believe. If we do not become conscious in this way, life will continue to be unfulfilling - like chasing our tail and never catching it.
As a human being our inner emotion is always multi coloured, grey, never black or white.
This is the missing secret to living a life in the fullness of its wondrous complexity, and then it becomes a simple affair.
